About Y
A native Virginian, Y
is the daughter of an Army Lieutenant Colonel who served in World
War II, Korea, and Vietnam. As a result, she has lived in many places
in the United States and has traveled around the world. Y
began elementary school in Japan and was graduated from Bad
Kreuznach American High School
in Germany. An alumna of Virginia
State University and Howard
University, she has also attended Bowie
State University, Federal
City College, University
of Maryland, Johns
Hopkins University, Norfolk
State University, and Virginia
Commonwealth University.
Her life has been spent teaching others. Whether at the pre-school
or college level, she has always possessed an ability to convey
her meanings and intent vividly to those with whom she was working.
Currently, she is teaching writing workshop and reading workshop
on the middle school level. Y
encourages her students to write and produce their own books of
poetry.
Looking forward to retirement, Y
plans make her home at Heartquake on the King and
Queen bank of the Mattaponi River. There, she will fill her time
with her writing and painting. She is currently working on a second
book of poetry, tentatively titled, 'Long Time Comin'.
"I look forward to being able to sit down and actually finish
something. My painting, I'll Fly Away, has been 'in progress' for
over a year." Having recently acquired five prints of her grandfather's
paintings, Y
plans to study his style and to "remake" at least one,
Sly Fox. "I was pleasantly surprised to find that a couple
of my paintings are reminiscent of several of his paintings of the
Blue Ridge Mountains." While Y's
paintings are water color and acrylic, her grandfather, Philip A.
Jones, produced amazing water colors, using dime store paint boxes
and brown paper for canvases.
Competing for her time away from teaching, are Y's
passion for sailing her catamaran, Chaos, and her love of skiing,
playing golf, gardening, reading, watching movies, and making wreaths.
She also enjoys walking, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, and,
recently, jet skiing. Jokingly, Y
says that her water skiing days are over due to the family's trait
of arthritic knees. Even in retirement, Y's
days will be quite busy.
